Portrait I've been working on the past few days. Maybe 6-8 hours of work. I don't think I've spent that long on a piece before and actually finished it.

I think you're opinion is right on about blending stumps and blocking in shadow contours - I say dump the stumps and block til you drop.
I don't think that "photographic likeness" is a very exciting goal - make a drawing of it and use the tools that work for you. Drawing has so many expressive qualities that a photo cannot approach - use 'em and have a ball. If you want a photo - use a camera
